Little did Shelby and Alex know that their brief high school relationship would turn into a marriage. After dating for a few months, they parted ways but reconnected via Twitter in college and dated long distance between Duluth and South Dakota. They would travel on the weekends to see each other, and after college, moved into their own town home in Chaska, MN. Alex proposed to Shelby on the same day they went to pick up their beautiful pup, Ruby, and were married this January at St. Victoria’s Catholic Church followed by a wedding reception at the Chaska Event Center.
At eight o’clock sharp, the girls gathered at MelisSalon for hair, makeup, but more importantly, for champaign, coffee, and bagels. Occasional clouds of hairspray, plenty of bobby pins, carefully placed eyelashes, things were in full swing at the salon. Meanwhile, the groomsmen arrived to meet Alex at the town home. They kept it simple and loaded their bloody’s with plenty of beef sticks.
Everyone gathered at the church where Shelby and Alex braved the cold for their first look. It had just snowed a few days before, so the ground looked so clean and fresh. Alex wore a blue suit and plaid tie that complimented the cool weather and Shelby’s long sleeved dress came alive in the wind. Their wedding party was even kind enough to brave the cold for a few. That’s how you test a friendship- if you are willing to stand outside in January in a dress for photos.
After some family shots, the ceremony started, and as Shelby’s dad kept her company in the back, the wedding party made their way down the isle. When it was Shelby’s turn, everyone stood up, and Alex bit his lip as she came toward him. They kept it together so well, looking relaxed and calm, but I did see a few tears from Shelby’s mom now and again.
As their guests enjoyed cocktail hour, the wedding party went next door to the Crooked Pint for a few drinks. The Chaska Event Center also has a curling club, so as they sipped on their beverages, they could see all the action.
Soon enough, it was time for the reception, and I am so impressed with the DIY decorations, it looked incredible in there! Shelby has a knack for decor and ideas, and one of my favorites from the night was the giant cake table. Besides their own wedding cake, there was a different kind of cake for each table. After a family style dinner, the cakes were set on each table. Shelby and Alex suggested trading slices between tables, and man, I wish I would have been able to sample them all.
After cake and toasts, they danced in front of the big fire place. Before it got too late, we were able to sneak outside for a few more photos. We were really hoping for snow, so we had to create our own. Thanks to my second shooter and shovel, we threw some snow in the air for some pictures before soaking the bride and groom, I’m so glad they were down for anything.
Shelby and Alex- Thank you!!! The whole day had so many great moments, I couldn’t narrow it down. When we have that problem as photographers, that means you had a wedding that was not only fun and eventful, but a celebration that everyone will remember for years to come. Have fun on your honeymoon!
